Raffes Insurance: Annual Report

Design: Emily Grobe
Art Direction: Susan Herda
Account Lead: Ali Dorn

Raffles Insurance is a group captive that helps commercial businesses with their insurance needs.

The Raffles brand is very nautical, and their annual report generally revolves around sailboat imagery. When they came to Rule29 with their 2022 theme “Expanding Horizons,” I knew I wanted to push them outside of their usual comfort zone and focus on wide, beautiful ocean photography.

Content

The way Raffles likes to do their report allows it to function as a yearbook just as much as a business report.

About 20 pages in this report were dedicated to business content, and around 40 were member ads and logos. With over 380 members, you can imagine how much effort was put into showcasing them all!

To ensure consistency, I created a standard layout for all the ads. Raffles’ members span many industries, and an ad structure that fit with the theme of the report helps to make them all cohesive.

Takeaways

During the course of this project I learned the ins and outs of printing large scale documents from pagination to prepping the files, creating varnish layers, working with the printer on proofs… all the way to getting the final booklets in the client’s hands.

This project was also a lesson in managing a client that likes to do things “the way we have always done it.” Raffles is a very traditional company, and it was interesting and fun to be a part of the process of nudging them gently towards new solutions. While de-emphasizing sailboats may not seem like much, the annual report style I was able to deliver was uncharted territory for Raffles.
